A 1920s-era building on the corner of 20th Street South and 5th Avenue South (right across the street from UAB’s Kirklin Clinic) has plans to be demolished and a new mixed-use apartment and retail building will take its place.
Location, Location, Location
The bustling Midtown area seems like the perfect location for this mixed-use housing project. With the new 20 Midtown developments, the new Publix, and the Waites apartments a few blocks to the East, Midtown has become a walking-friendly and urban area.
On the same block as LAH’s new development are Bristol Southside, a condo development, and a new retail/restaurant space in the former Merienda Lounge. Clearly, this new development has Birmingham at its fingertips.
The Syndicate Lounge, Quality Shoe Repair, and Classic 13 Tattoo are currently residing in the building and will be relocating before construction starts.
The Nitty Gritty
LAH Real Estate and 20 Midtown developers Dick Schmalz and Scott Bryant are partnering on the project.
This new apartment building will have 62 or 63 units and will be the perfect place for UAB students and professionals to live. The central location will keep residents close to everything going on downtown.
The ground floor of the building will have a national retailer, which will be named soon. The budget for the project will be $15 million.
So When’s This Happening?
If all goes according to plan, Tammy Cohen, the architect for the project, will begin rolling out plans in the coming weeks and construction will begin in early 2018.
