Birmingham Innovation Week 2017 is underway. An annual celebration of innovation in Birmingham, the city will showcase its finest inventors, investors, entrepreneurs, supporters and catalysts that drive it.
There are many fun events going on throughout the week. You won’t want to miss out! Here’s Bham Now’s guide to Innovation Week 2017.
Friday, August 18th
Innovation Week Birmingham 2017 Ribbon Cutting
Time: 12pm
Location: Innovation Depot
What is it? The official Birmingham kick-off for Innovation Week 2017!
“She Started It” Film Screening
Time: doors open at 6pm, film begins at 7pm
Location: Velocity Accelerator at Innovation Depot
What is it? A free screening of “She Started It,” which is a documentary that follows five Silicon Valley women and their tech start-ups. Following the film will be a panel discussion with some of Birmingham’s most successful women in tech! The event is free, but you have to RSVP here. Space is limited!
Sunday, August 20th
ZYPing Around Innovation Bike Tour
Time:Â Three tours from 2 to 3 p.m.; 3 to 4 p.m.; and 4 to 5 p.m.
Location:Â Starts at the ZYP bike station in front of the Regions Building, at the corner of 5th Avenue North and 20th Street
Cost: $15 (this includes bike rental)
What is it? A bike tour of the brightest spots in Birmingham. Tours are limited to 10 people, so register quick!
Monday, August 21st
Solar Eclipse Viewing Party
Time: 12:30-2pm
Location: Southern Research’s Southside campus
What is it? This is the first total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. in nearly forty years. Southern Research is hosting a viewing complete with food trucks and free solar viewing glasses! Register here.
Tuesday, August 22nd
Bham Now’s BOLD Speaker Series with Jennifer Skjellum
Time: 5:30-7pm
Location: Avondale Brewing Company
What is it? Previously featured as our Birmingham Innovator, entrepreneur Jennifer Skjellum is taking the stage. CEO & President of TechBirmingham, Jennifer offers great insight for our city. Come out, grab a beer, and meet some folks- it’s free! You can RSVP here.
Wednesday, August 23rd
EDPA 2017 Innovation Awards
Time: 4pm
Location: Alabama Theatre
What is it? EDPA is hosting keynote speaker Thomas L. Friedman, a Pulitzer Prize winner, New York Times columnist, and best-selling author. After Friedman’s speech, there’s the Innovation Awards, networking opportunities and an after party. Bham Now wrote all about it here.
Thursday, August 24th
BBA’s Business@Sunset, presented by America’s First Federal Credit Union
Time: 5-7pm
Location: Martin Library at Southern Research
What is it? A reception at sunset where you can connect with business leaders from various industries. Register here!

Magic City Hacks
Time: 9am
