Welcome to the Bham Now Nature Roundup for July 6th.

Earlier this week on Facebook, the Birmingham Zoo posted this great picture (below) of Farley, the California Sea Lion recycling a plastic bottle.  I was particularly struck by the figures quoted in the post about the number of plastic bottles we use and the waste we throw away.

Here is the post:

Americans throw away 25,000,000 plastic beverage bottles every hour. The US is the #1 trash-producing country in the world at 1,609 pounds per person per year. This means that 5% of the world’s people generate 40% of the world’s waste.

Obviously, we all need to reduce the waste we create, but let’s also support recycling in Birmingham.  If you haven’t done so, check out the Alabama Environmental Council’s recycling center in Avondale.  They take pretty much everything including plastic and yes – even glass! More importantly, the AEC is the leading organization in the state when it come to advocating for waste reduction and recycling.

Check them out today!

Now onward to this week’s news and events!
