Candidate Interview

When did you officially announce your candidacy and where/how did you do it?

“I have not had an official announcement yet.  But, I will be announcing my candidacy on June 26, 2017 at the Springville Library on Springville Road.”

What is the name of your principal campaign committee?

“The committee to Elect Sherman Collins Jr. District one City Council.”

Why do you want to run for Birmingham City Council?

“I am running for the District 1 council seat because I want to bring positive change. For the past eight years our district has been on a steady decline with no hope in site.

“Economic growth is almost dead.  We don’t have adequate grocery stores, no shopping and absolutely no entertainment for ourselves and children.

“Crime is on the rise and home values have decreased.  Our district is on the fast track to nowhere while we are being pacified with parties and excuses.”

More Questions And Answers

What is your background, education and experience?

“I am the current District 1 Birmingham Board of Education member, and I have the pleasure of serving as vice president of the board.

“I have a bachelor’s degree from Samford University in business administration and a minor in sociology.  I graduated from Huffman High School.

“I currently own my own property management company and insurance agency. I am the current volunteer basketball coach at Sun Valley Elementary School.  I started the program and have maintained it for seven successful years.  I not only coach the boys in the sport of basketball, but I also mentor them in everyday life challenges.”

How will you foster a healthy, working relationship between the mayor’s office and the Birmingham City Council/city hall?

“I will do what I have done in my role on the school board.  I will build bridges and not walls. I will work for the citizens instead of (so called) fighting for them. I am not going to city hall to fight.  I am going to work.”

How will you accomplish transparency with the residents of Birmingham, if elected?

“Transparency is extremely important to me.  I want the citizens’ trust and confidence, and I know no other way for that to happen but to be transparent.”
