Ruffner Mountain Birmingham Alabama

Last night, Ruffner Mountain celebrated its 40th year with the unveiling of a new donor wall. A one of a kind work of art, the colorful mural depicts the urban natural world. The wall honors the Ruffner’s founders, donors, foundations and volunteers who have poured their blood, sweat and tears into a nature preserve in Birmingham that is larger than New York City’s Central Park.

“It’s our chance to honor all the people over the past 40 years who have supported Ruffner Mountain. It is our way to thank them, stated Carlee Sanford, Ruffner Mountain’s Executive Director.

The wall, which was painted by local artists Shane B and Creighton Tynes, captures the urban natural world.  The names of the supporters are enshrined on each side of the painting.

The Donors

According to Sanford the donors listed on the wall is a mixture of the original founders, donors, foundations and individuals who either supported Ruffner with their time, money, even gifts of land. She also recognized that the donor list may not have everyone listed because so many people “made Ruffner possible.”

“It’s inspiring to see the years and decades of work that went into this place,” added Sanford.

The Possum

The most prominent animal in the painting is the possum in the center. One of the first annual reports back in the late 70s featured a possum on the cover and there has been several famous possums who have made Ruffner their “home.” In fact, there is also a Possum Trail at Ruffner.
