Civitan Club of Birmingham and the Jimmie Hale Mission team up

Tony Cooper, executive director of the Jimmie Hale Mission, spoke at the Civitan Club of Birmingham’s monthly luncheon on Friday, April 21, 2017. Combined, the two organizations have served the Birmingham area for more than 170 years.
The Jimmie Hale Mission was founded in Birmingham in 1944 and has served thousands of homeless men, women and children over 73 years. The mission has grown to include a men’s center near Sloss Furnace, Jessie’s Place for women and children, the Royal Pines recovery center, after school Bible studies, thrift stores and education and career centers.
“The Birmingham Civitan Club has a long history of serving our community,” says Kearney Hutsler of Civitan. “Likewise, the Jimmie Hale Mission has served the homeless for over 70 years.”
Civitan is celebrating its centennial this year with a convention in Birmingham. Based in Birmingham, Civitan’s international focus is on funding research and serving people with developmental disabilities. However, each club also looks for and addresses a variety of needs in the cities and neighborhoods they serve. The Birmingham club announced intentions to serve meals for the clients at the mission.
“We plan to partner with Jimmie Hale this year to provide a dinner for their residents,’ says Hutsler. This is a chance for us to not only give monetary support but also to meet the residents and learn more about them. It is important for people to understand each other and talk to one another. As Civitans, we always strive to help our fellow man.”
