Alabama Environmental Council to celebrate their 50th year at the Green Tie Affair

The Alabama Environmental Council turns 50 this year, and on April 20th at the Clubhouse on Highland they will be celebrating in style at the Annual Green Tie Affair.

A Birmingham – based conservation organization, the Alabama Environmental Council (originally the Alabama Conservancy) was founded in 1967. The organization was instrumental in the establishment of the Sipsey Wilderness, Cheaha Wilderness, Dugger Mountain Wilderness areas and the Little River Canyon National Preserve.

Throughout the years, the organization was the “Johnny Appleseed” of Alabama’s environmental community, helping start numerous local grassroots environmental organizations and recycling programs. Today, the Council’s recycling center in the Avondale neighborhood is the largest non-profit recycling facility in Alabama.
