Birmingham’s Top Things To Do: March 9-15

We have another shortlist of things to do in Birmingham!  At least until next Wednesday, here are ten of my most-anticipated events:

String Theory @ Trimtab Brewing Company, March 10, starts 7PM – This local group of conservatory-trained musicians play pop and rock on their classical instruments.  Hearing a complete genre breakdown is really incredible.  Details

Legends of the Galactic Heroes, tellin it like it is

The Art of Fermentation @ Birmingham Botanical Gardens, March 10, starts 6PM – whether you’re interested in brewing your own beer or in how we came to start letting things ferment in the first place, this combined lecture-workshop series is for you. Details

Market by the Tracks in Avondale, starts 9AM March 11 and 12 – It’s nice to get out and see something new.  Art, people, and food especially!   Market by the Tracks, coincidentally, has all three of these things, so come visit on the weekend! Details

Holi Festival, March 11, starts 11AM – The Holi Festival is crazy fun.  Dancing, music, food, Bollywood, art-making, storytelling, and more are on tap for the Indian celebration of color, but the most visible activity is Holi itself, the game where you throw powdered dyes at each other!  If you haven’t been at least once, you should go.  Details

Full Moon Hike @ Desoto State Park, March 11, starts 7PM – Who doesn’t like taking walks at night?  Come out with a jacket, flashlight, and water to explore the Boardwalk Trailhead after dark.  Details

Great Gospel  “An Adorning Rotation” release party @ Seasick Records, March 11, starts 7PM – Birmingham has a surprising rock scene.  Great Gospel, one of our homegrown metal acts, will be performing their new album, “An Adorning Rotation,” in its entirety this Saturday to celebrate.  They’ll be joined by Loveislight, another Birmingham native.  Details

There’s an incredible view at the downtown Publix

Publix Presents Family Camp-Out Night @ Railroad Park, March 11, starts 3.30PM – You know the Publix that just opened near Railroad Park?  If not, you should check it out, their parking deck has incredible sunset views (seriously).  Anyway, learn how to navigate, find constellations, and more while you camp out on Railroad Park this weekend.  You should probably have registered by now, but look here for more details

The Future Primitives, Medusa’s Disco, Blue Yonder @ The Syndicate Lounge, March 12, starts 8PM – Psychedelic rock is on deck this Sunday in a concert featuring Birmingham’s own Future Primitives!  If you haven’t seen them in concert, you should, they were fantastic when I saw them at SlossFest.  Details

Open Lab @ Red Mountain Maker Space, March 13th, starts 6PM – if you’ve found something you want to try out on a 3D printer, have a project that needs soldering and no place to solder, want to play with fiber optics, hang out and meet fellow makers, it’s your time to shine.  Makerspaces are great for anyone who has that occasional burst of brilliance but doesn’t want to quit their day job to invent the next best-selling vending machine (really, think of all the machines they must sell, whoever made that is rolling in cash right now).  Check out more details here

Network Under 40 @ Aloft Birmingham Soho, March 15th, starts 6PM – Networking can and will make or break a career.  This isn’t as glamorous as the concerts, or camping or DIY, run-from-the-BATF brewing of other events, but connections you make here can help you keep paying for all the other stuff, and chances are you’ll have fun while you’re there!  Details
